Trauma
Trauma can be related to a specific event, repeated experiences, or stressful situations. Experiences of trauma are always different for everyone, but they can cause a person to have chronic feelings of being unsafe.
Memories of trauma are often not conscious. However, they can cause difficulty in a person’s life, resulting in irritability, inability to trust, anger, startling easily, being hypervigilant, and more.
Experiences of trauma result from the body/brain thinking that the experience is continually recurring. Unlike other memories, trauma memories cannot be recalled.
When this happens, modalities like EMDR or sand tray help process memories of trauma without words. They can help our body understand that the trauma is not continually happening now but is over.
EMDR
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing) is a type of therapy that helps the brain reprocess memories of trauma.
After EMDR, you will be able to think of trauma memories and not feel as emotionally involved or view memories as a movie. This will result in a lessening of anxiety, nightmares, or inability to feel safe in the world around you.
Research shows that EMDR results in a dramatic reduction of PTSD symptoms that cannot be achieved with traditional talk therapy.
Sand tray
Sand tray is relaxing and can take the form of playing in sand or using figures to create scenes or memories.
Experiences from sand tray often release memories that you may not be aware of consciously. This leads to reframing experiences that have hurt you in a more positive way.
Sand tray usage also helps decrease symptoms of PTSD or trauma experiences.
Sexually reactive behaviors
Sexually reactive behaviors are sexual reactions to normal events that happen around us. These behaviors can include public masturbation, touching people inappropriately, constant erections, etc.
These behaviors are often trauma reactions and are treated along with past incidents of trauma.
Sexually reactive behaviors are disrupted, and the client learns new healthy reactions to the world around them.
